Highlights from the Whangārei Orchid Show

Last weekend’s Whangārei Orchid Show was a wonderful celebration of the incredible diversity of orchids, with some beautifully grown and impressive specimens on display.

From spectacular Paphiopedilums carrying numerous flowers to elegant Angraecum, colourful Cattleya, and delicate miniature species, there was plenty to admire. One of the standout plants was the golden-flowered Oncidium Twinkle ‘Oro’, producing clouds of tiny flowers, while the dark foliage and masses of delicate white blooms on Ludisia discolor var. nigrescens showed that jewel orchids can be just as impressive in flower.

The show also featured some exceptionally well-grown specimen plants, demonstrating just how beautiful orchids can become when given years of careful cultivation. The miniature orange-flowered plant was another lovely reminder that spectacular displays do not always need large flowers.

It was great to see so many different genera, growing styles and award-winning plants together in one place. A big thank you to the Whangārei Orchid Society and everyone involved in putting together another enjoyable show.
