Maxillaria tenuifolia, commonly known as the “coconut orchid,” is a charismatic and widely appreciated species within the orchid family Orchidaceae. Native to a broad range of Central America—particularly Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica—it typically grows as an epiphyte in warm, seasonally dry to moderately humid forests at low to mid elevations.
This species is easily recognized by its clumping growth habit, consisting of closely spaced pseudobulbs topped with a single narrow, grass-like leaf. Unlike many orchids valued primarily for large or showy blooms, Maxillaria tenuifolia is especially prized for its fragrance. Its relatively small flowers—deep red to burgundy with a contrasting yellow or spotted lip—emit a strong, sweet scent reminiscent of coconut, particularly during the daytime.
Flowering generally occurs in spring to early summer, with individual blooms arising singly from the base of mature pseudobulbs. While each flower is short-lived, well-grown plants can produce multiple blooms in succession, creating a striking and aromatic display.
Adapted to bright light, good air movement, and a distinct wet-dry cycle, Maxillaria tenuifolia is considered a rewarding species for growers. Its resilience and unique sensory appeal make it a favorite among collectors, especially those interested in fragrant orchids or naturalistic displays such as mounted or basket-grown specimens.
